Sprawling north of Lake Storsjön, Sandviken is a bustling town in Sweden’s Gävleborg County. It’s surrounded by well-restored industrial villages, such as Gysinge and Högbo Bruk, which are dotted with historic forges and smithies. Nearby are the downhill skiing and snowboarding facilities of Kungsberget, a ski resort that comes to life in the winter months.
Things to do in Sandviken
Dominating the town centre is the Sandvikens Kyrka, which was built in the 1930s on the site of a 19th-century church. Constructed from bricks and red granite in a Neo-Gothic style, it is topped by an imposing tower with a chip-clad spire. Step inside to experience the church’s serene interior and admire its impressive chandelier.
In the winter months, you can warm up with a swim in the heated pools of the Parkbadet or enjoy a soak in one of the hot tubs. There are several water slides and a climbing wall that kids will love, as well as trampolines and a toddler-friendly play area. Parents can rejuvenate in the Relaxation Centre with its German-inspired sauna.
Sandviken makes an ideal base for visiting the Forsbacka Bruk, a historic iron mill that has been preserved as an industrial monument. Learn about the working conditions of employees here in the 18th century and visit the beautifully preserved slush house. Changing art exhibitions and audio-visual presentations are showcased at the site and there’s an inviting cafe serving light meals and drinks.
