About Awaji

Overlooking Osaka Bay, Awaji lies on the north-east coast of Awaji Island in Japan’s Hyōgo Prefecture. It is connected to the city of Kobe by the Akashi-Kaikyō Bridge, which spans the turbulent waters of the Akashi Strait. Awaji is famed for its traditional puppet theatre and memorial to the Great Hanshin earthquake.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss Awaji World Park Onokoro, a family-friendly amusement park with a large Ferris wheel and gentle rides. It features miniature reproductions of famous landmarks from around the world, such as the Taj Mahal and St. Basil’s Cathedral. Also within the complex is an ethnography museum showcasing global artefacts.

Perched atop a hill south of Amaji are the ruins of Sumoto Castle, which existed during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. In 1928, its tenshu was rebuilt to commemorate the enthronement of Emperor Hirohito and the castle is now designated as a National Historic Site. Amidst its stone walls is a museum detailing the fascinating history of the castle.

If you drive in the other direction from Amaji, you’ll arrive at the Awaji Yumebutai, which was designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando as a memorial to the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995. It includes a conference centre and the Hyakudanen, a stepped garden with 100 flower beds terraced down a sloping hill. Combine your visit with a stop at the Crayon Shin-chan Adventure Park, which features zip lines and attractions inspired by manga characters.
